Guidelines to better Photography

Avoiding Mergers
I  chose this picture because it has a plain background and its focused on one thing. And if someone were to just look at it, they would know exactly what they were looking at because there are no distractions on the picture.
Lines
This is a line photograph because there are several lines in it. There are the lines that reflect off of the light. "Diagonal lines are Dynamic!"

Framing
I chose this photo because i think that the light pole was framing the picture

The Rule of Thirds
I chose this picture because the building with the flag was more off to the side, it wasn't directly in the middle. And it was taken from the right side and not right in front of it.

Balance
I chose this one because this photo is balanced. The mood of it, it pretty much looks the same.
Simplicity
I chose this photo because there are n distractions from the building and its just the sky background.

Painting photos

Campbell’s soup cans by Andy Warhol

Some photographers get hung up by finding subjects for their photos. They want something spectacular. A better skill to have is being able to make the ordinary seem extraordinary and that is what Warhol did with these cans of soup. The photographer followed the instructions because its different and she took something ordinary and turned into something unique. I think that this style of painting would influence me because its different and you could make so much out of something so little, you bring meaning to the paining.

This is an original picture of a Campbell's soup cans, she just took the same thing and painted it into a bigger picture

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

Photo manipulation is using photo shop to add or remove things in your photos. Photo shop can be extremely dangerous because in the past it has cost people their jobs and careers. You may use it in the right time and when needed. I think that this is acceptable because, say you were taking a picture and something got in the way so you could simply remove it with photo shop.

February 2003: Saddam Hussein and George W. Bush did not debate, but appeared to in this cover shot.

I think that this photo is unethical because this didn't even happen so its basically feeding the people lies. This is the kind of photo shop that they shouldn't do because its not true so they shouldn't make it seem that way.

February 1982: The pyramids were moved closer together to accommodate this vertical National Geographic cover.

I think that this is acceptable because they were just moving things closer to fit onto a magazine to put a better image. In this case its alright, it just depends in what they are changing or taking out of the picture.

National Geographic

I chose this photo because I think that it was captured good. The photographer probably took a long time on this but it came out wonderful. I like how the photographer got the water coming out of their mouths at the right time. If I had to submit one to the contest I would probably take a picture of my dogs because I personally think pictures of animals are amazing.

Touching Photos

In touching photos, photographers get strangers to touch each other as in holding hands or putting their arms around each other. I personally wouldn't want to touching another person or have another person touch me. But they are great photos, just not for me.

A dog named "Leao" sits for a second consecutive day at the grave of her owner, who died in the disastrous landslides near Rio de Janiero on January 15, 2011.

I chose this picture just because I know how it feels to have a dog and so much love for it and then lose it. When you get a dog .. it gets attached to you and this picture just says it all. A part of you leaves when you lose something special. I like how the photographer took this because it has the whole background showing that the dog is the only thing there with nothing . And it also shows the setting and what kind of mood there is.

Terri Gurrola is reunited with her daughter after serving in Iraq for 7 months.

I chose this photo because it shows a strong bond between a mother and a daughter. It shows how much they had missed  each other and how happy they were to see each other. I like the way the photographer took this because it shows that they were at an airport and the mom had just gotten off ready to see her daughter.

Australian Scott Jones kisses his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas after she was knocked to the ground by a police officer's riot shield in Vancouver, British Columbia. Canadians rioted after the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins.

I chose this photo because I think it means a lot not only did he risk his life but it shows how strong their love was. I also like how the photographer took the picture, how it blurs everything else out and it just focused on them.  And I like how it also shows all the other people running away from them.

Great black & white photographers, PART 2

Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman was born on January 19, 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. She was the youngest of five children and she grew up in Huntington, Long Island. When Sherman was a freshman in college she had studied painting until she realized that it was not for her. After Sherman gradated she moved to New York to get her career started. She was a model and she is in some of her photos that she takes, she plays different roles not specific ones, but she does this for her photographs. In 1980, Sherman created a series called "Rear-Screen Projections". And in 1981, she was commissioned by a magazine, Artforum, to do a "centerfold". She sold her photographs for a lot of money, and her popularity grew around the world and still continues to grow.

“That was when I thought, ‘Why am I wasting my time elaborately copying things when I could use a camera?’ ”
